Modifications to allow gtk (as of the 980816 CVS snapshot) to
compile without errors on SGI IRIX 6.3 (IDO 7.1).  As I'm not a regular
gtk developer, I can't attest as to the conformity of the changes to original
design intentions, but the changes are quite minor and primarily involve
type-checking pedantics.
