Group Reports:

CLASS remained pretty consistent throughout the entire month, proving they are
not going to slack off after their  1997 performace.  They also  had the  best
rated game of the month, Croc: Legend of the Gobbos (c) FOX Interactive.  This
is still the group to beat, and should remain that way in all of 1998.

PARADIGM was also active throughout most of the month, except towards the end.
No real  games of note, and most of their releases were done  in Europe.  They
will need more then this to keep their #2 spot or move up to #1 next month.

RAZOR 1911 started the month off by releasing a few  very foolish releases and
were pretty much dead until their UK connection came through and saved them at
the  end of the month, literally.  If HYBRID was active, their chances of this
happening again are slim to none.

BACKLASH remained  consistent, but was not  heard from until the middle of the
month.  They had 1 release and a couple of patches to atleast give them a shot
at a respectful score at the end of the month.

GENOCIDE just popped up at the end of the month, and didn't do too badly for a
new group.  Have to wait and see what they can do in February.

HYBRID was HYBRID which means they are on vacation.  Might hear from them next
month if the UK division of RAZOR starts talking too loud.

DIVINE just  went downhill from where they put themselves last month.  It will
be an uphill battle for them next month.

January is typically the slowest month of the year when it comes to games, and
this held true once again in 1998.  While there wasn't but a handful of games,
there was  still a few events  of interest.  Mainly the  retirement of  2 well
known  individuals, The Punisher of Razor 1911 and ChinaBlue  of CLASS.  There
has been  much debate on the effect this will have  on their respected groups,
and so far Razor seems to be the ones hurting.  However, there is a rumor that
The Punisher  did not retire and it was just a  big coverup to  give him  some
room to  breathe.  In either case, we will have  to wait and see  what happens
over  the next  couple  of  months.  You can read  about  both retirements  at
www.scenelink.org as  well as all other news as it happens.  TRG announced the
winners of  its Games of the Year 1997 vote.  You can  find all of  the latest

uploaded too all major sites.  RAZOR 1911  decided to release the
CROC.REG from the good CLSCRC01.ZIP as a fix and was subsequently
nuked.  On January 20th, 1998 uCF  releases a Cyrix processor fix
to allow both the  store bought copy and the CLASS version to run
properly  on systems with  the Cyrix CPU.  This  was the fault of
            the programmers, not CLASS.

Notes: PDM released a 7 disk  Music Addon (PDM-SMA*.ZIP) on January 13th
in  MP3 format.  This is the  first time a  group  has used  this
type of  compression.  Make sure  you have  an extra  100MB of HD

Title: Descent to Undermountain (c) Interplay
  Released: January 13th, 1998 Disks: 75 Filenames: PDMDTU*.ZIP

Description: Undermountain  is a dungeon  labyrinth  built  by the  mad wizard
Hainster.  Located  directly beneath  the City of  Waterdeep, its
shadowy halls, crypts, and abandoned temples  and natural caverns
have always been a source of fear for those who make homes in the
            city above.

OS: DOS or Windows 95  Hardware: P90 CPU, 32MB RAM, 350MB HD

Notes: Requires a Sound Blaster compatiable sound card.

Yet another form  of compression  is being used, this  time it is
called ACE.  It is  slower then RAR, but seems to save that extra
couple of MB when you need to get a game below the 75 disk limit.

This game came to stores in the USA  on December 22nd, 1997.  Due
to large amount of ripping & stripping that needed to be done, it
was  not easy and obviously  took some time.  Congratulations  to
PDM for taking that time to get it released.

PDM  released  a 10  disk  Miscellaneous  Addon  (PDM-DG*.ZIP) on
January 13th  which adds the  "loading pics" as  well as 3 of the
            music tracks.

  Released: January 13th, 1998 Disks: 20 Filenames: RZRJUG*.ZIP

Description: 13 new  levels, 2 all  new weapons, and 650 all new  textures for

        OS: Windows 95 + Quake 2  Hardware: P133 CPU, 16MB RAM, 65MB HD

Notes: The  supplier  releases  it without  going  through  the "proper"
channels.  Razor leadership does  not approve, and have  it nuked
off  sites as being "FAKE".  It is then  re-released by that same
supplier  re-packed as  an  IND  (Independent)  release, but  the
RAZOR.NFO was  still in the first  disk.  The saddest part  about

Description: Includes about 15  fixes and 10 changes to the current version of

Notes: There was an IND release (HELLFIREDLL.ZIP) on January  20th which
made it possible to install the BLH patch and play Multiplayer on
Battle.NET.  Seems the original, unmodified Hellfrui.dll  must be

Title: Moto Racer v3.20 (c) Electronic Arts
  Released: January 21st, 1998 Disks: 1 Filename: BLHMR32.ZIP

Description: This version  uses only 3D polygons for the whole  display during
the game  instead of mixing 3D  polygons and 2D surfaces (for the
background  or  the  Heads  Up  Display - H.U.D.-  for  example).
Consequently, this update is more compatible with 3D boards which
deal with 3D only.  This version  better deals  with any 3D board
to  adapt the program's behavior to the board's capabilities.  It
also  achieves better  performance  on  some 3D boards  and fixes
several  bugs, mainly  related  to  the  bike  leaning  amplitude
depending  on the  frame  rate  and resulting  in  higher  racing
performance with a higher frame rate.

    :............:

Rule #1: First WORKING  version wins, period.  If there is a  race between
multiple groups, the group  that loses will not  receive negative
points.  However, if  a few  months  later  a  group  decides  to
release the same game, they will receive negative points.

Rule #2: The  disk limit is  set at 75.  This was set  by the SPA  back in
the Summer  of  1997.  A  release  over this  pre-set limit  will
            receive negative points.

Rule #3: There has always been a  controversy surrounding game addons.  If
the company that releases the addon is the same company that made
the game  it is  considered  legit.  Some addons are  Authorized,
while others  are Official.  Authorized is not the same as  being
Official, and in the end that is what it comes down to.

Rule #4: The point system is as follows:

Games receive  points based on  their rating.  This report  gives
them the rating based on how good of a game it is.  The score TRG
gave  them from their review is next to  our score, but does  not
factor in.  It is there for the reader to see how our score ranks
against theirs.  The points will be between 2.0 and 10.0  No game
will receive less then 2 points.  Deductions are made if the game
requires a fix, or if it is proven to be Beta.

Official Addons receive between +1.0 and +4.0 points depending on
the addon itself.  The better  the addon, the more points it will
get.   Unofficial  Addons   receive  -2.0  points.  Addons   were
            discussed in Rule #3.

Sound/Movie/Music  Addons  receive  0.5 points.  No more  then  2
addons  will receive points per game.  If a third addon  for that
game comes out, it will  receive 0 points.  Also,  addons must be
released  no later  then 3 days  after  the game is  released  to
            receive points.

Patches and  Trainers also  receive +0.5  points.  Hopefully more
groups will start doing patches, so  the end user can  upgrade to
the most  current, bug free  version of their  favorite game  and
not be hassaled with a CD check.

Fixes, ones  that are necessary, will  receive -1.0 points if the
group that released the game puts it out.  If another  group puts
out a  fix before then, that group  receives +1.0 points and  the
other group will  also receive -1.0 points.  An un-necessary  fix
would be one that isn't needed to  play the game and will receive
            -1.0 points as well.

Dupes, as discussed in Rule #1, will receive -2.0 points.

Betas are only  considered to be  beta when the final  version is
released.  The deduction  for this is -2.0  points AND the amount
the  game scored IF  it isn't  proven to  be beta until  the next
month.  If it  is proven beta by the  end of the month, the group
that released the beta will  just receive the -2.0 points.  There
is no  bonus points for  releasing a final  version, it  is still
scored the same as any other game.
