Hello and goodbye. This is now the last issue of Demojournal
edited by me. I sure would have wanted to make something nice
for this issue, too. But then I travelled home to my family and
who would like to spend his xmas in front of the computer? So
now the only thing I have, is a demo review from Seven.

Anyways it was nice to be an editor for these few issues I had
to do. Though Demojournal is not a real diskmag, in a way it's
more challenging to make small newsletter when you know you
have to be ready every weekend despite how much time or lust
you have for editing. So respect to all you diskmag editors from
me, I never realized before how big pain in arse this job can be. :)

In case anyone of you are coming to TP9, it would be nice to see
you. I don't have any reserved place there, but you can most
likely meet outside the partyplace. Just seek for Finnish people
drinking beer and ask if I'm there. Happy new year, I'm off now!

Cyboman 2 by Komplex (final-version)

2nd place at the Assembly'99 Java Compo.

a Java Virtual Machine (Ask for it at your local hardware-store :))

The demo:
Ok, in search for (not necessarily recent) demos to review, Melwyn
suggested Cyboman 2/Komplex. Oh my god, a Java demo! Isn't that
awfully slow, asks the coder in me? I can't really answer, because
Cyboman 2 does not feature any recent (= CPU-heavy) effects. As a
matter of fact, it's a remake of their 64K intro that placed first
at The Party in 1994, so the effects are 3D-only. There are lots of
phong-shaded torusses, which was considered a difficult effect back
then. The next years almost every demo had toruses, and people
really tired of them :). Other objects include a few human faces, the
Complex-logo (Yep, back then it was "C", not "K"), and the mysterious
things that live inside torusses :). Everything is in 640*480 hi-res
which makes the demo look more crisp, but it has a few side effects:
the gouraud-shaded inside of the torus doesn't look very smooth, and
the background texture is repeated more often.

The best thing about the remake is of course that also non-GUS owners
can enjoy the music, a really funky demo-tune by Jugi. It's also the
biggest part of the demo: 1.5 MB, the code and GFX take only 200K. It
seems to be one big audio-file, apparently there are no tracker-based
music systems for Java. And the messages are stored as complete
JPG-screens, not as a font plus texts :-/ But I can understand that
remaking a demo is less exciting then making a new one, so you don't
want to spend as much time coding it...

Worth the download ?
If you've a GUS, you can stick with the original intro: the differences
are rather minimal, and it's not always an improvement. For example,
the nice morphing heads/cubes are now boring static heads. For the
SB-owners, this is your chance to fully appreciate an intro that was
extremely popular in 94-95 (just check out the Imphobia 9, 10 & 11
intro charts). Also Mac/Linux/whatever users can check it out, just
click on cyboman.htm in your favorite browser...
