Elemental-
Here we go, CORRUPT 4! Recognize this ascii? The very talented and active
artist cRu of 1oo% changed his style and drew some new logos. If you rememb-
er, cRu also did the art for issue one. Anyway, I got very positive feedback
on issue three, which I think is the best one yet. The only negative comment
I got was that people missed the indivual group comments in the charts. Well,
now they're back. Speaking of charts, the point system has also been modifed
a little bit. There is now 6 points rewarded for what is decided to be the
game of the month. Getting out a highly anticipated game that everyone has
their eyes on is much harder then getting the next kiddie-crap release, so it
deserves an extra point. Older games which were not released when they
were new now only get 3 points instead of the regular 5. Lastly, there is one
new member of CORRUPT. Welcome raver, member of PHANTASY and SCS*TRC on the
Commodore 64! On with the corruption.

tribe-
Right, first of all the charts in this mag may be missing a few releases
and if that's the case I deeply apologise. Elemental gave this mag to me
in the middle of the night and said that he didn't care about this mag
anymore, but was willing to comment it if I finished the charts (that were
only half done). So with the help of Ego_UK's fab site
(http://www.subport.org) I tried to figure out what releases were missing
from the charts.
This will be the last issue of Corrupt, unless someone tells me that they
appreciate this mag. So if you care about this mag AT ALL email me at
[email protected] or contact me on IRC or some board.
Btw. if anyone wants to write an article/review for this mag, please do.

raver-
Comments is a thing i will be writting here in. You like'em? Somebody said
he likes. Somebody else said he also likes. So i'm doing them and like
that too, i have always been admirer of subjectivity and judging other
people's work is a top of that thing.Firstrelease charts are subjective
anyway, so i feel damn good here, being corrupted member of corrupt
charts. I would like to know how much did i annoy you with my lines!
You could try [email protected] for a thing. As about magazine, you see it
might well be the last issue. Like anyone care.

Nintendo is a major game. The next Japanese Pachinko game is not.

Never seen this guy before? Acey's a Danish guy, most known in the scene for
running the Nintendo 64 webpage http://64zine.vintagegaming.com/ and the Ni-
nintendo Entertainment System webpage http://nesworld.vintagegaming.com/.
For those of you that don't know, here's the story behind these releases. In
Europe there's a little German company called Sachen that releases legal and
unlicensed multi-cartridges containing 4 games each. Because of the carts
being unlicensed, Sachen had to use a different architecture, and so copiers
are not normally able to copy the games. Acey happend to own every Sachen
cartridge produced, and with the help of RedboX of Dextrose, they were able
to be copied. The only draw-back of this is that the multi-cartridges for so-
me reason couldn't be released, and only the individual games on the multi-
cartridge. As for the quality of the releases themselves, being old GB games
and not GBC, they weren't distributed very well, so Acey started putting them
up on a webpage... I'll let you decide if this is a good or bad thing. The
file_id is ugly and contains no ASCII logo, and the nfos are full of mistake-
s. Even so, if you live outside of Europe, this is most likely your first
time even hearing about these games, let alone getting the chance to play
them.

tribe-
Someone once told me that these Sachen carts were impossible to dump. Looks
like he was wrong because they were released by a guy called Acey and dumped
by a guy called RedboX. For some reason they couldn't be released in their
original 4in1 form though.

raver-
Shitload of GB releases, please note some real hacking is done here, at
least at hardware level! On the other hand, something not very scenish
showed up in charts again... Should i say: "good month for Acey"? :D

Without a doubt, the best release from Capital this month would be Konami GB
Collection Vol. 2, a sequel to Volume 1 that Capital also released before.
It's a collection of four old games made by Konami for the Gameboy, but now
in color. Read the review for more information on the game. When it comes to
trainers, Capital dominated as usual.

tribe-
Capital released four games and two trainers this month. Yes you read right,
TWO trainers. Not very much compared to the previous months when they usually
had trained LOTS of games. Let's hope they just took a small break and will
start training huge amounts of games once again.

raver-
I guess CPL is just bored training these games with no competition. I've
heard that CPL isn't game releasing group, so they should feel really lonely.
Maybe they released just two trainers because they wanted scene to get their
lazy asses (like mine) off to do some trainers themselves?

Just who is Divide by Zero anyway? If you read the latest Monthly Gameboy
Scene Charts International, you'd see them listed as independent. In earlier
issues of CORRUPT they weren't even mentioned. So, do they count as a real
scene group or not? That's up to you to decide, but as far as my standards
go, they qualify as a group, and will have their place in the CORRUPT
charts. Maybe more people will take them seriously now that they are releas-
ing trainers. The QIX patch definitely didn't help their reputation though...

tribe-
It's always a pleasure seeing people code for the GB/C. Nothing but respect
to this group/person.

raver-
I am sure it's group. Lucky enough i am way too lazy to activate my
intrusive journalism to investigate who the fuck they are. It's just
damn good they released just one trainer less than CPL!

High Society is well known for their work on the Nintendo 64, but when it
comes to handheld consoles, they are just barely hanging on from being comp-
letely inactive. The last Gameboy Color release from High Society was
a trainer for Mr. Nutz, released months ago. Maybe High Society will get more
serious when it comes to coding for the GBC. Could HS possibly be a threat
to Capital in the future? At this rate, no.

tribe-
Not very much activity in High Society GBC-wise this month, one trainer.
Still that's better than nothing, but I hope we'll see more from them next
month.

raver-
But they are looking for new gameboy members, so the question just is will
they be looking carefully enough. I doubt if you ask me, because it is
probably much easier and more exciting to rule N64 scene than search for
a member of dying race, yeah a lot of groups are looking for coders. Where
are they hidding?

Not much to say about the independent releases this month. The V1 fix for
Dragon Warrior Monsters also works on the German version (titled Dragon
Quest Monsters) released by Lightforce. There was also a very good issue of
the Monthly Gameboy Scene Charts International released.

tribe-
I was told that the Kel release wasn't actually even done by Kel. I don't
know if that's true but the FILE_ID.DIZ I made for him wasn't used so I
suppose it might be.

Suprisingly, even with Fazwonga! on vacation in the United States, Oldskool
dominated with all those games. Their first release of the month was the
Japanese version of Super Mario Brothers DX with English text. Funny that
Nintendo released this game in the USA before Japan. Totsugeki! Papparatai
is very fun. The new Wario game is a very major release. Overall, an excell-
ent month to leech stuff from Oldskool.

people had been waiting for Warioland 3 and it was worth the wait, well
atleast in my opinion.

Elemental-
Everyone's FAVORITE group strikes back with 3 more releases. Tony Hawk is
definitely a major. I'm sure there was a large croud waiting for Battle Tanx
also. If you aren't a collector, and you haven't leeched Rayman yet, don't
waste your time. It's only 2 bytes different from Menace's European release.
I suppose if TC didn't do it, somebody else would have. There really needs to
be stricter rules when it comes to determining what's a dupe and what's not...

tribe-
Three releases from The Corporation this month, including the addictive Tony
Hawk's Pro Skater which was released under an hour before Menace released it.

raver-
Bah! Slovak "ass" comes in here again! Dupe ain't a dope, wouldn't be too
hard to change even 3 (!) bytes of old release to have an another "firstie".
Show this to any c=64 scene person and he/she will laught his/her ass off!

I was planning on giving this 3 points, but then tribe finished the charts.
Well, it's up to him. I suppose most of us won't use this, but I'm sure a
large croud of lamers and coders will thank Utopia for saving them $2.

tribe-
It was really hard to decide how many points this should get. On IRC almost
everyone had a different opinion about this. On one hand cracking a program
that normal users can buy for $2 is simply a bit stupid, and this program is
very respected in the scene anyway, but then again why should the author of
this program be treated different than authors of other programs.
So there were two options, either give Utopia points as if this were just any
tool or to give them minus points. Since it was so hard to decide I gave
Utopia 0 points for this. I hope there are no hard feelings Utopia.

raver-
I know there are people who can't really afford this or should i say they
could but that would bite then. Martin, should we give points to UTP? If
you ask me... i will say, let them have them!

Here are reviews of some of this month's releases. When reviewing games, we
will only review a game in a language the reviewer is not fluent in if the
game contains so little text that it is easily playable. We will never rate
a game badly because the reviewer does not understand the game's language.

Just like it's brother, Rayman,  ___\ _____\__\____\ ____________\-----------
Tonic Trouble was originally on
the Nintendo 64, but Ubi Soft ported it to the Gameboy Color. Last month Ray-
man was released and was highly-rated as possibly the best platform game on
the Gameboy Color yet. Did Ubi Soft top themselves with Tonic Trouble? Not
even close. While Rayman was 32M (and it showed, just by looking at the qual-
ity of graphics), Tonic Trouble is only 8M, so you know right off the bat th-
at the graphics aren't going to be as good. The graphics aren't bad, but
after seeing what Ubi Soft can do on the Gameboy Color, it's a disappointment
to see them release this game with less than average graphics. But hey, it's
the game-play that counts after all. So how's the game stack up? As far as
platformers go, it's really not bad. There are many different worlds with 3
levels each, and the 3 levels must be completed in order. Between worlds you
get to talk with a character who'll introduce a new (and not very well thou-
ght up) reason to send you to the next world in search of different items.
There tends to be two different kinds of run and jump games, those where you
must go from point A to point B, and those where you must get a certain
amount of item A and B. Tonic Trouble falls into the latter category. This is
one area where the game falls short. You'll often find yourself going back to
levels you completed long ago and running through them numerous times looking
for the one item you missed. This is tedeous, repetitive, boring, and frustr-
ating. Lastly is the sound. Other than the music playing in the background,
there is really no sound effects at all. This is obviously a negative thing.
Overall, despite all these shortcomings, the game is still not bad and worth
playing if you like run and jump games.

+ Review by: Elemental

Here's the second game in the Konami GB Collection series. A while ago Capit-
al released Vol. 1, and now they deliver us the sequel. The GB Collection
series is just older Gameboy games Konami made, modified to be in color, and
four of them packed together on one cartridge. In Vol. 2 Konami included
Parodius, Block Game, Track & Field, and Frogger. Here's a quick over-view
of each game:
PARODIUS - One of Konami's most famous games. Here's the original one on the
Gameboy. For you unfortunate people who have never played it, it's a side-
scrolling shooter similar to R-Type but is made to be cartoony and resemble
a animated Japanese TV show or comic. The four characters you can choose,
each with different weapons, are Vic Viper, a traditional video-game space
ship, Octopus, Twin Bee, and Pentarou the penguin. The game is very chall-
enging, and one of the best you can get if you like shooters.
BLOCK GAME - A very unique puzzle game. Squares fall down in different shapes
and in order to make them disappear, you have to shoot squares up at them.
Like Tetris the squares stick to each other, and when you form a rectangle
they disappear. If you can't form a rectangle out of the falling squares
fast enough and they hit the bottom of the screen, it's game over. Although
lacking different game-modes, the game is still good.
TRACK & FIELD - This is essentially a series of mini-games. Although the
graphics make it look like different track and field events, every game is
really pretty much the same. Rapidly press the A button as fast as you can
and then hit the B button. As you can imagine this gets boring after 5 min-
utes of play. You can save batteries by keeping the Gameboy Color turned off
and slamming the buttons as hard and fast as you can. This isn't very diff-
 erent from the game itself.
FROGGER - You know the deal. Get a frog to it's home without being run over,
eaten, etc. This is just as good as the arcade original.
With Track & Field being the only really bad game, Konami GB Collection Vol.
2 has variety and good games. Most people have played Parodius already, and
who hasn't played Frogger yet? With it being nothing other than old games,
it can't be called excellent, but it is good.

+ Review by: Elemental            =[GBC]================================[32M]=

Everytime a Japanese game is released, people are skeptical. There are so
many Japanese role playing games, simulations, etc that require the knowled-
ge of the Japanese language to play, that many people tend to not even bother
looking at the latest Japanese release. Sometimes these people will miss out
on a truely excellent game, and with Totsugeki! Papparatai by J-Wing, that is
the case. Like Konami GB Collection Vol. 2, Totsugeki! Papparatai is a series
of games, but these are all brand new and not older games. There are two ma-
in modes of play. The first being a story mode, and the second is like a pr-
actice. You get to choose one of the mini-games you have already completed
and play it. After you finish there is a high-score table with hiragana, kat-
akana, and roman characters for you to enter your name in. In story mode, you
get to choose between three different characters initially, each with their
own advantages and disadvantages in the mini-games. Next you have to watch a
short story sequence in Japanese. Even if you are not fluent in Japanese, it
is still fun to watch the pictures in the story. If it doesn't interest you
at all, each sequence is only about 30 seconds long, so it's not too boring.
Once the sequence is over you will be prompted to start the next mini-game
(first option) or view a tutorial on how it's played (second option). Most
mini-games involve shooting, and luckily many of the games are good enough to
be a game by themself and not just a mini-game! The games range in variety.
The first one is similar to Space Invaders. You must shoot the waves of enem-
ies and aquire enough points to finish the game. There's also shooting range
type games, R-Type style shooting games, and a lot more. If you didn't play
this game when it was new, I highly recommend you try it now. Totsugeki!
Papparatai is without a doubt the best game released this month.

different ramps, the only difference with them is that they look a bit
different though. The challenge mode has around seven different levels, these
are actually different from each other in many ways ;).
The half pipe mode is very similiar to the ramp part of Skate or Die on the
C64 (and other platforms). This game doesn't have the third dimension included
as Skate or Die did though, which is a shame. The challenge mode is some sort
of race that's pictured from the birds-eye-view perspective. As I mentioned
the half pipe mode rocks and the challenge mode sucks. There is also a version
of the challenge mode with only one opponent (usually there are four) and in
this mode you don't make any points by making tricks. Needless to say, this
mode sucks too.

Hope everybody enjoyed these four different text-files, because I'm done
with them now. Don't expect to see any textfile called corr!*.txt with my han-
dle in it again. Personally, I think this issue was the best yet. The charts
got tweaked to make it more fair. There were more commentors this time. I like
the slightly different looking game reviews section. cRu's ASCII logos are
excellent, as always. I've talked enough. Ok, bye.

A quiet month for everyone except Oldskool, who totally rocked. What happened
to all those Menace releases and Capital trainers?
I'd just like to say goodbye to Elemental leaving the staff of this mag. But
I'm not going to get sentimental or anything like that since we'll still see
each other on IRC...
