G'day,
All good things come to an end. I have decided to leave the scene for a
bloody good reason. Not because I'm fed up with the scene, or that I'm
not able to pay the bills, nor the fact that I hate the arrogance of
today's scene, nopes none of it all ... I have accepted a job in Botswana
(Africa). I am gonna work in a place called Maun. It is situated at the
edge of the Okavanga Delta (for you Safari lovers out there ;), and working
there seems to me like the ultimate challenge. Maybe I can set up an Botswana
scene (nah don't think so ;)

Looking back at the last few years, I must say it's been a fun time. For me
it all started out a couple of years ago. (ermm 1990 to be exact) Some weird
Australian guy came living next to me, and he brought along his pc with a BBS.
I found out that he used to have a 5 node board in Australia in the Eighties,
and because his Dad had to work at the European Court of Justice for a year,
he decided to open a board called 'The Switchboard' next to my front porch.
I didn't have a clue at that time what he was doing, all those weird handles,
the secrecy, the free phonecalls, it was all very new for me ... but also very
exiting. The only thing he traded were Mac and Unix (!) warez, no
pc/ami/console.

I thought it was quite amusing and I joined a group he was in (Bladez) and
started trading using the old BB techniques (Mac warez were usually not larger
then 3 megs, and unix warez were/are even smaller).
His group was booming and quite a few good traders joined. My neighbor
(Castro) had to leave the country when his dad finished his business here.
He moved back to Australia. Shortly after that almost every U.S. Bladez board
got busted. The group slowly died and I was looking for another thrill. I
called some boards in Holland (which I never did before) and found out that
the scene in this little country was quite alive. Most of the boards were
single node, but some of them were quite fast. At that time I had my own board
with mainly Mac warez and some BBS tools. I decided to close the Mac and Unix
chapter and started to concentrate on the pc scene (are you still with me ;)
After a while I was not able to put in enough time in my board becuase I was
just to busy doing other things (full time job, getting pissed ... aka
important stuff ;) ), I decided to go off-line (b.t.w. we are talking June
1994 now).

In December 1994, I reopened my board again. I even started out with a very
prosperous business at that time (some of you know what I mean), and things
were going smoothly. At that time I downloaded an aszcii collie for the first
time and I was amazed to see what people can do with '-, |, /, \ etc' chars.
I got hooked on the azcii bizz right away. I started to collect every pack
being released and my ascii conference was growing and growing.
I met up with Satan's Fire who also was into the ascii bizz. I told him that
I had plans to start a group that would courier ascii collections and ascii
collections only. He immediately was exited about the concept and rOadhOgz
was born. After a while I came up with the idea to make some sort of a
magazine for the ascii scene as there are quite a lot mags concerning the
demo/warez and other scene's, I thought it would be nice to have an Art
Magazine. I found out that making the mag is a hell of a job, but it was
getting quite popular. -So- we continued after the first trial version.
While I am typing this, Satan's is finishing the 5th art magazine.
Satan's Fire and Diablo will hopefully continue the success story of the art
mag together with the other RDZ members. I wish them all the best of luck!

couple of years, and I am sure I will have even more fun in Botswana ( I
wonder how the women are there ;)
