My opinion is that most modern games suck.

That said, you can have a look at the Stanley Parable. It is an
adventure/storytelling game built on the half-life engine. Not exactly recent,
though.

If you are into terror, check the first Amnesia game. Beware: if you play witha
real sound system, in the dark with a candleholder, it is one of the few
horror games that actually give you the creeps. Then again, not really recent.
Known to run on Linux.
