I did some digging and it occurs to me that I probably misremembered - I'm
pretty sure it was actually WINFOCOM which was a Waffle BBS propreitary door
that I doubt you can easily get working with anything else. I was playing
with and running Waffle for a brief time back in the 90s. :) Search for
WINFO100.ZIP if you want to try playing with it though.

Yeah, there are some methods for sending DOS I/O out which would let you use
a normal interpreter. This is actually well documented in the NetFoss user
guide here:

on, but someone even made a special port of Frotz specifically to be used this
way (for Linux):
