When I first tried Telegram, I did not like the idea of
releasing the phone number assigned to my Blackberry. Although I
could install the app on my desktop *first* (unlike Signal which
forces you to install the app on a phone first), the
registration required that they send a code via SMS - and that
process obviously requires a cellphone.
In Telegram's case, it doesn't necessarily have to be your own
phone number. It only needs to be a phonenumber where you can
access the SMS code they send you.
