No, they are doing this because stock smartphones are only good if you use them
how Google and Apple intend you to use them,
which is through their ecosystems so they can mine the crap out of your data.

Main reason why people started experimenting with alternative firmwares was
precisely that it allowed to run crazy stuff and
customizations. A lot of people in this day and age still install custom
firmwares for the ability to use some custom
application-launcher overlay and then they install Google's ecosystem on top of
it anyway.

Using custom builds allows you to implement things at low level like ad
blockers, which Google does not allow under ToS. There
are ways to run an ad blocker in stock Android but it ilvolves loading custom
applications you have built or sourced from a
third party repository so...
