27 June 1985 - AMERICA'S LEGENDARY 'MOTHER ROAD' IS NO MORE: It's too
late to get hip to timely Route 66 tips, as the once heavily travelled
highway spanning the US heartland from Chicago to L.A. (California) is
officially decertified. Formerly stretching more than 2,000 miles, the
giant US interstate highway system now renders the route obsolete.
It was recognized in popular culture by both the 1946 hit song "(Get
Your Kicks on) Route 66" and the Route 66 television series, which aired
on CBS from 1960 to 1964. It was also featured in the Disney/Pixar
animated feature film franchise Cars. In John Steinbeck's novel The
Grapes of Wrath (1939), the highway symbolizes escape, loss, and the
hope of a new beginning; Steinbeck dubbed it the Mother Road. Other
designations and nicknames include the Will Rogers Highway and the Main
Street of America.
US 66 was a primary route for those who migrated west, especially during
the Dust Bowl of the 1930s, and it supported the economies of the
communities through which it passed. People doing business along the
route became prosperous, and they later fought to keep it alive in the
face of the growing threat of being bypassed by the more advanced
controlled-access highways of the Interstate Highway System in the 1960s
and 70s.
US 66 underwent many improvements and realignments over its lifetime,
but it was officially removed from the United States Highway System in
1985[2] after it was entirely replaced by segments of the Interstate
Highway System. Portions of the road that passed through Illinois,
Missouri, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Arizona have been communally
designated a National Scenic Byway by the name "Historic Route 66",
returning the name to some maps. Several states have adopted significant
bypassed sections of the former US 66 into their state road networks as
State Route 66. The corridor is also being redeveloped into U.S. Bicycle
Route 66, a part of the United States Bicycle Route System that was
developed in the 2010s.

3 lb Coarse ground beef
2 ts Famous Daves Steak seasoning
1/4 c + 1 tb Mexene chilli spice
1 ts Coarse ground black pepper
4 ts Ground cumin
2 ts MAGGI seasoning
1 tb Dried basil; crumbled
1 tb Garlic granules
1 c Celery; chopped fine
1 c Onion; chopped fine
1 c Green bell pepper; chopped
1 lg Jalapeno; stemmed, seeded,
- diced fine
32 oz Can Brooks Chilli hot beans
22 oz Can tomato juice
15 oz Can diced tomatoes
15 oz Can tomato puree
10 oz Can beef broth
3 tb Famous Dave's BBQ sauce
2 tb Kahlua
2 tb Worcestershire sauce
Combine ground beef, steak seasoning, chilli spice, black
pepper, cumin, MAGGI, basil, and garlic powder in a pot and
mix well. Cook until the ground beef begins to turn a crusty
brown, stirring frequently. Add celery, onion, green pepper,
and jalapeno. Cook until the vegetables are tender, stirring
frequently.
Add undrained chilli beans, tomato juice, undrained tomatoes,
tomato puree broth, BBQ sauce, Kahlua, and Worcestershire
sauce and mix well. Simmer until the desired consistency is
reached, stirring occasionally.
Ladle into chilli bowls. Serve with shredded Cheddar cheese,
minced onion, and plenty of crackers.
* NOT Dave of UDD fame. This is a different famous Dave. His
recipe is pretty much guaranteed heartburn city.
