Hi Dale,
RH> My parents used to hit up the used bread stores in towns about an hour
RH> away when they had to go for medical appointments. They did more so
RH> after all of us kids had left home, usually buying a lot of common,
RH> sandwich type bread and a good amount of things like rye, semi wheat,
RH> etc. They also bought a lot of doughnuts, coffee cakes, etc and stowed
RH> it all in their freezer. We (Steve and I) never had a bread outlet
RH> nearby, probably wouldn't have shopped there even if we had one.
DS> There used to be a pepperridge used bread and cookie outlet somewhere
DS> that was not close, but was on the way to a sometimes destination. We
DS> would stop there and buy a few things. The cookies did not suffer
DS> from being past sell by date -- and the price was down to what was a
DS> reasonable value. In the grocery store they always seemed overpriced
DS> to us.
Just saw an article in today's paper about how much food is wasted by
people ditching it after "best buy" dates. Article also said that "use
by" dates have some wiggle room but not a lot for things like dairy but
"best buy" should be more of a suggestion than "the law" some people
think it is. I think I'd buy Pepperidge Farm cookies at an outlet,
especially if they were the chocolate chunk or chocolate mint. (G)
