Last weekend the northern branch of the family held a birthday
dinner for Roslind's youngest brother. Everyone brought one dish, so
nobody was overburdened. Roslind made a moose lasagne using 3 pounds
of ground moose, 2 of beef and 1 of pork. It filled a whole 400
hotel pan. The moose flavour came through nicely with those ratios
and was improved by the additional fat from the beef and the pork.
She was able to use fresh herbs from our mini-garden for the ragu
seasonings. Her version always has layers of cottage cheese in
it and we sprang for real Parmigiano-Reggiano this time to go into
the Mozza and Friulano cheese mixture.

Others brought a nice charcuterie board and pickle tray to start
things off, a very good Caesar salad and for dessert, a triple fudge
cake: devil's food cake, with chocolate frosting and a sprinkling of
white and dark chocolate shavings on top as garnish.

All in all a wonderful meal. I would have loved a glass of three of
Folonari with the lasagne but some of the guests were abstainers so
I settled for water and sun tea.

That wasn't too painful as some of us had gathered at my place ahead
of time to enjoy a pitcher of cherry Manhattans:

8 oz Canadian rye
4 oz sweet red Vermouth
2 oz cherry Whisky
1 tb lemon juice

Chill. Serve on the rocks. Makes 4 large or 8 reasonable drinks.

Cheers

Jim
