Hi Dale,
RH> My parents used to rub us with cider vinegar when we got sunburned.
RH> Don't know which was worse, the burn or smelling like vinegar. (G)
DS> That was my Mother's thing as well. It worked to help cut down on the
DS> blistering. I'm not sure whether she did it because of medical
DS> statements (she was a nurse) or because of folklore.
I'd guess it's a folklore remedy. Neither of my parents, nor their
parents had any medical training.
RH> I like licorice and cilantro in small amounts but ginger snaps and egg
RH> nog in much larger quantities. (They go well together.) Buttermilk is
RH> good for baking but I'd just as soon not drink it. (G)
DS> Gail is the same as you on buttermilk, maybe even worse. She says her
DS> throat clampts shut at just the thought of it, but she did use it in
DS> bakeing (albeit buttermilk powder). I am sort of fond of buttermilk.
Most of the time I'll use just soured milk in baking but, depending on
the recipe, I might buy and use buttermilk. Checked out some recipies
for Okracoke Fig Cake since we've so many figs this year; one
specifically said to use buttermilk, not just soured milk. If I make a
fig cake, I'll post the recipe but meanwhile, it looks like I'll make
another batch of jam (plus figs for eating "as is"); the tree is quite
prolific this year.
DS> This might make a decent recipe for you to make for some of your
DS> church events. You might even keep a very small piece for
DS> yourself:-}}
