Hi Dave,
DD> I use OTR as entertainment that doesn't require constant attention nor
DD> concentration. The Lum & Abner episodes are 15 minutes long (mostly)
DD> and don't tackle any "heavy" subjects.
RH> Thing is, with the older shows, I need to give it most of my attention
RH> to catch everything. Part of that may be from just listening to it in
RH> the truck, outside noises do make it harder to hear. Still, when using
RH> a knife to cut up stuff for supper (last night was red bell pepper,
RH> onion and mushroom, sauteed, then chicken apple sausage (precooked)
RH> added in), I want to be able to concnetrate on that. I served the above
RH> with brown rice, dessert was ice cream at Lumpy's (in town place, he
RH> makes all his own, including extracts, etc used, part of the 2019
RH> picnic).
DD> See above - it's entertainment not "education". It shouldn't require
You need to be able to hear the jokes to laugh at them. (G)
DD> "concentration" (an early Hugh Downs TeeVee game show).
I watched it when I was young, at my grandmother's house.
DD> Radio then jazz or classic rock.
RH> We have enough other sounds in the house--Steve's radios, 3 chiming
RH> clocks, a cuckoo clock, etc........
DD> Living on a busy thoroughfare I use radio as "white noise".
Our street is semi busy, depends on the time of day. There's a large
Catholic church with associated school several blocks away; trying to
get out after mass has let out is almost impossible. Don't need a white
noise for traffic but I do use one to block most everything else out.
DD> Interestingly - Lum and Abner was modelled on Waters, Arkansas where
DD> Chester Lauck (Lum) and Norris Goff (Abner) grew up. That town is now
DD> named "Pine Ridge" because of the radio show.
RH> Anywhere near Dogpatch? (G)
DD> Dogpatch USA is/was located in NW Arkansas south of Branson, MO. The
DD> originator of Dogpatch, Al Capp, never specified a location for his
DD> mythical town - and I had always thought it would most likely be in
DD> Eastern Kentucky/West Virginia.
Sounds logical for there but Arkansas is just as 'hillbilly" in spots...
