Since he was older than me - and I pre-date the atom bomb - I'd hazard
a guess that it was coincidence.

DD> OTOH - the earliest form of audio story telling - Old Time Radio - is

RH> We listened to a number of old shows on this current trip, a good one
RH> yesterday was Bob Hope with guests Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis.

DD> Also Fred Allem and Jack Benny. Or Fibber McGee and Molly or Lum &

DD> Lum & Abner was a 15 minute radio "sit-com" supposedly broadcast from
DD> the "Jot 'em Down" store in the (mythical) town of Pine Ridge,
DD> Arkansas. It was the first network program broadcast from Radio City

DD> (1933). The first to do a marathon charity broadcast and the first to

DD> Chicago.

RH> Sounds like quite a team. (G)

DD> Here's a link to over 1600 episodes - I dare you to listen to one and

RH> Probably best I not start listening then. Got enough irons in the fire
RH> right now--home for a bit but will be up in VT before the end of the
RH> month. In the meantime, I picked up a rush alterations job from one of
RH> the young men at our church.

I use OTR as entertainment that doesn't require constant attention nor
concentration. The Lum & Abner episodes are 15 minutes long (mostly) and
don't tackle any "heavy" subjects.

I *always* have some audio entertainment playing - if not Old Time Radio
then jazz or classic rock.

Interestingly - Lum and Abner was modelled on Waters, Arkansas where
Chester Lauck (Lum) and Norris Goff (Abner) grew up. That town is now
named "Pine Ridge" because of the radio show.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

     Title: Lum's Beer Hotdog
Categories: Beef, Beer, Breads, Vegetables
     Yield: 8 Servings

    12 oz Beer *
    24 oz Water
     1 ts Sugar
     1 ts Garlic powder
     1 ts Caraway seeds
1/4    Wedge of a fresh onion
     8    (4 oz ea) all-beef hot dogs

 * if you are a teetotaller use Sharp's or O'Douls no
 alcohol beer.

Bring everything to a boil, reduce heat to a lowest heat
and let stew for no less then 15 minutes or longer for
 more intense flavor.

These are delicious to eat right out of the stewing pot or
do them the Lums hotdog way, remove and grill slightly.

Serve on a Quality Hot Dog Bun.
