DS> How did the maintenance guys turn off the alarm in your apartment?
It had already stopped on it's own. Now I use the vent fan over the
stove, I never used to...to loud, and mine is vented to the outside.
I'm in a smaller place than you, I suspect. 140 units, all in one
building, 3 full floors and 1 partial. So the maintenance guys handle
"security" too.

I have a diagram on my door indicating my evacuation route and where
I'm supposed to be so they can count noses, part of the reason I tell
them when I'm in Arizona. We also have earthquakes to worry about, I
missed out on the evacuation for that several years ago because I was
away. Technically speaking I live on the 1st floor. But because of
the slope by the time you get to my unit I'm almost 2 floors up with
a few units below me and underground parking below that.
They've got signs up warning of mama moose and her baby in the area,
and therefore bears are suspected to be near. When I moved in here I
laughed at the signs posted saying to use the stairs in the event of a
fire. At the time I could barely walk up a flight of stairs and I was
very slow going down since I never knew when I was going to catch my
heel on a step. Legs weren't working well at all. I read the sign
and mentally said "Well if there's a fire...I'm toast."
