modems to cram more bauds down the limited bandwidth. If VOIP does not
work, it might be (guessing again) a digitization that might not
faithfully preserve the phase information needed for the coding of a
moden.

Yes, I used SIO for years with InterMail when I had my system on an OS/2
machine. It really helped.
