Hi August!

01 ﭢ 23 10:38, August Abolins -> Wayne Harris:

WH>> When I work in 31C, I am not very happy.  If your HDD is
WH>> like me, then, yes, that's bad news for it. :-)  Happy new
WH>> year.

AA> I'm reading the following as common info:

AA> "HDD Overheating Symptoms

AA> "The normal temperature of a hard drive is from 40C to 50C
AA> when it is in work. The temperature of HDD should not be more
AA> than 70 C. An IDE hard drive is usually from 30 C to 50 C.
AA> It probably causes data loss or even worse it may damage the
AA> hard drive when its temperature is up to 100 C.

Meanwhile, the colder your drive is, the longer it will live. I try not to warm my drives over 35C.

[fido@brorabbit ~]$ sudo smartctl -a /dev/sda |grep -i temp
190 Airflow_Temperature_Cel 0x0022   076   001   000    Old_age   Always -     24 (Min/Max 20/24)
194 Temperature_Celsius     0x0022   076   057   000    Old_age   Always -     24 (Min/Max 20/26)
[fido@brorabbit ~]$ sudo smartctl -a /dev/sdb |grep -i temp
194 Temperature_Celsius     0x0022   028   032   000    Old_age   Always -     28 (Min/Max 21/32)
[fido@brorabbit ~]$ sudo smartctl -a /dev/sdc |grep -i temp
194 Temperature_Celsius     0x0022   117   094   000    Old_age   Always -     30

AA> Further to my enlightenment:

AA> C:\Documents and Settings\User>chkdsk
AA> The type of the file system is NTFS.
AA> Volume label is SYSTEM.

AA> WARNING!  F parameter not specified.
AA> Running CHKDSK in read-only mode.

AA> CHKDSK is verifying files (stage 1 of 3)...
AA> File verification completed.
AA> CHKDSK is verifying indexes (stage 2 of 3)...

[...skipped...]

AA> Index verification completed.

AA> Errors found.  CHKDSK cannot continue in read-only mode.

It only says that these files are currently open. This is normal. Try HDDscan.
