Howdy! Mike,

XP booted fine this morning.

The last Acronis True Image (TI) back up I made was done back in
2018.

I used Windows Explorer on another pc to look at that file and
copied the config subdirectory (c:\windows\system32\config) on it
to a thumbdrive.

I used a Ubuntu v16.04.3 Live CD on the XP box to put the file
called "system" from the Thumbdrive in place of the "system" file
that was in XP's C:\windows\system32\config\ subdirectory.

And doing that brought the XP pc back to life!

Thanks to Jean Parrot who wrote in this echo long ago about his
experience of using a CD with Ubuntu v7.04 as a Live CD to try
learning about Ubuntu.

He called Ubuntu "U'u" in his messages, and I still use that
abbreviation.

Jean's success gave me the idea to try playing with U'u myself
so I downloaded a copy of U'u v7.04, burned it on a CD-R disk,
and ran it as a Live CD to see what I could learn.

Before I tried the above procedure, I first tried to use TI by
booting from the 'TI Bootable CD' I made after I installed TI.

I wanted to use the Restore option to get the "system" file from
my 2018 TI backup, but after selecting the Restore option
I couldn't find the old back up file to do the Restore, so I went
to plan Number Two (above).

And it worked!!!!!!!!

Now, besides reading gobs of BBS messages, I got to wade through
the 170+ Emails I got yesterday in my Thunderbird In-Box.

And all of the other things (projects) I wanted to do but couldn't
because XP wasn't working then.

Here On Earth Computers Alway Win Because THEY Have Inside Information.
