I think you're thinking of some other animal <grin>..
The SCALA language was developed by Professor Martin Bodersky at EPFL, a
university I think in Switzerland, but it wasn't until 2008 that it became
really usable.
Here's a description of sorts:
"The name Scala stands for "scalable language." The language is so named
because it was designed to grow with the demands of its users. You can apply
Scala to a wide range of programming tasks, from writing small scripts to
building large systems. "
