So far so good. You admit that a standard nodelist is needed in order to
fill in the holes. In stead of hunting for holes, just take the whole nodelist
and convert it to xml. Less PITA.

You might want to read P4 a bit beyond 2.1.11 and 2.2 in order to
understand what I really had in mind.
