I think you mean "artificially-imposed" limits.  I'd be a bit careful to
generalise though.  Sometimes these limits are necessary because they make
software design too complex or impractical without them.  This was particularly
true in the DOS days.  It's still relevant now though, eg.  a limit of
4,294,967,295 messages per messagebase file is still a limit, even if you can
effectively treat it as if there were no limit.
