Finally got away to go see a movie this afternoon.

I went and saw The Amateur.

I have mixed feelings about this film.  While it was not a total stinker it
was not a movie that I would really RAVE about either.

Chales Heller, a shy and socially inept cryptanalyst with the CIA is out for
revenge when his wife Sarah is murdered while at a business conference in
London.  Using data he collected of illegal operations conducted by the CIA's
Deputy Director he wants to be put into action to get revenge from those
responsible for his wife's death.

The only problem is he can't shoot a gun.  Still undeterred he uses the skills he does have to go after the bad guys.  Will he ultimately be successful?  Will Charles be taken out by operatives of the corrupt and cornered Deputy Director or by the killers he is hunting?

The movie for the most part plods along, with enough action to keep it
interesting, but it by no means keeps you on the edge of your seat.  The movie was obviously shot digitally, and at times looks more like something shot for TV vs the big screen (I miss the graininess of film, and the feeling of 24fps.).  Several of the slower more dramatic scenes were ruined for me by
being shot handheld.  I can understand using a Steadicam to shoot action, but
not some of the more intimate scenes.  It definitely ruins the closeness when
the camera drifts up and down (Even slightly).

Was it a bad film?  No.  Do I regret seeing it?  No, but it could have been
better.
