Hello Mike Powell!

MP> One way to find out might be to try to watch it on YT and,
MP> while it is on, click the "gear" button.  I think there
MP> should be an option in there to turn subtitles on/off.  If
MP> you turn them off, and they are still there, that means
MP> they are burned into the video.  If you turn them off and
MP> they go away, they are autogenerated.

The only catch is that I would have to dole out the fee to even
begin watching it.  I am not personally interested in the film;
I'm just looking into it for a friend.

There are other rental sources, like Apple TV, but I'm not sure
if the rental would use the autogenerate technology too.
However, their advertising mentions "Closed captioned: French |
English".

Anyone here have any success downloading with yt-dlp from apple
TV?

The YT rental scheme isn't very nice.  "Start within 30 days,
finish within 48 hours after first playback."
