I've got a Drake UV3, dual band rig. It covers 140MHz to 149.995MHz and
440MHz to 450MHz. I've owned this radio since new in 1978, purchased
from AES. These rigs didn't come with a PL or 'sub-audible' tone encoder,
but I've installed one internally. It has a selector switch on the front
panel and has 12 tones. I can't remember if this was one of the radios I
modified to xmit out of band, but it doesn't squeal (Drake trademark) when
you tune to 148+ MHz., indicating to me that it has been modified. If
you're not familiar with Drake equipment, the UV3 was slightly ahead of
the dual/tri-band radios we have today. However, they weren't entirely on
top of it as the radio has the capability to do digital frequency display,
but they chose to use bulbs behind numbered dials instead. I modified my
other UV3 tri-bander to digital display. Without a digital display,
you're at the disadvantage of not knowing what frequencies are in the
diode programable 4 channels, unless you attach a card with those
frequencies on it. With the digital display, you can see what's been
programmed on either band (all three in my other UV3). I don't need to
get rid of it, but like many of my other radios, they're just taking up
storage space in the garage. I know I've got an Icom IC45a (UHF) out
there and may have an IC47a (UHF) and an IC27a (VHF) too. I know for sure
the IC45a needs some attention, as it doesn't have a display anymore. The
IC47a worked great and was in excellant condition when I put it away.
Also, there's an IC2a walkie talkie out there that works intermitantly.
I'd have to take inventory to really know what's out there.
... Use less bandwidth? Get a laser!
