The active talk-boxes (about DM 700.00 in Germany) work with the guitars
line-signal, amplifying it and driving a small speaker with high pressure
output to which the tube is connected. The tube ends near a normal microphone
and the mouth is used for building up resonants on different frequencies
depending on how wide you open it. This is then amplified using the microphone
and a pa. I can remember that there are cheaper talk-boxes (about DM 300.00)
which are passive, using part of the speaker-output, but I'm not sure if they
work that good, never tested this types, the first type is very cool. Tried it
but it was to much money for doing "living on a prayer" with original effects
so i used my old CryBaby. Does nearly the same if you have time to modify the
frequency-range (and cheaper by the way...)

Take care,
Thomas
