We're trying to find, what could be wrong in GoldEd using ncurses. And it reproduces, so probably we'll find some solution.

I know. But there are many other problems, not just displaying unicode symbols, but also splitting long paragraphs of non-english letters. They may be 2-4 bytes long in UTF-8 and It will be weird in reader window.
