There are a lot of dead echos on Fidonet.

Hmm, sounds like Fidoweb. ;)

Maybe the idea can be refined and made into a post by post distribution system
like newsgroups with top notch dupe detection, so when one node says "I have
message ID <ID>, with hash <hash>", their peers can say either "Send it" or "I
already have that one", and save sending it in the first place, if it's not
needed.
