One place bulletin boards are still relevant is the dial up world where
people have no internet, or it's highly restricted by their government.
Using a dialup BBS is a good way to get reliable news and relay
messages to the outside world.

A lot of people in Russia, for example, maybe have limited access to
world news and opinion, which can easily be found through a dialup BBS.
