I did. I did a proof-of-concept engineering desktop back in 2014 for
my employer. We wanted a Linux VM and a Linux bare-metal desktop we
could roll out for our developers. I was able to get AD authentication
working with Centrify, most of the groupware working with Evolution,
and found a plethora of plugins (alliteration!) that worked pretty
well.

Our client engineering team wasn't great at being able to customize
images, so it took a lot of tweaking to get a dev environment working.
With our VM, the developer run our custom image and check in their
first bit of code on day 1.
