You may want to read up on what this free version offers now. I don't think it's anything like ESXi was, to be honest.

XCP-ng is another option. While it doesn't support containers, I'm sure it's great at running VMs. One thing I liked about XCP-ng over Proxmox was that it had a web interface as well as a console interface (rather than just a login prompt and a bunch of manual commands).

If you have a different machine (like a desktop where you can run Virtualbox on it), you can spin up any hypervisor you want to test out, and make your next decision based on something /you/ like, rather than something you were told to like. ;)
