Compaq seemed like they wanted to differ from IBM for difference's sake. IBM standardized on "one beep OK, two beep NO" with their BIOSes. You hear two beeps, you know something's wrong.

Compaq did the opposite, and any time one of the Compaqs booted up, the two beeps would damage my calm.

We did get rid of the Compaqs and go all IBM PS/2, I ended up taking home a Compaq Portable II, the green screen model, with a 20 megabyte "brick on a stick" ISA hard drive.
