The ZoneGate option is normally selected on the sending system. When it is
selected, the destination address in the message header is changed from the
actual destination to the ZoneGate system, (origin zone:origin
zone/destination zone) with the actual destination remaining in the INTL
kludge line. With most connections in FidoNet being made over the internet
these days, the ZoneGates were considered unnecessary overhead and thus
removed from the nodelist.
In this case, I wonder if Ward accidentally selected the ZoneGate option when
replying to your message. Your system apparently saw that the incoming packet
was addressed to 2:2/3 and sent it back to Ward based on your routing rules.
