He did one better and claimed that he was not talking to Matt, even though
he was responding to Matt. Alan is probably embarrassed that he tried to
tell a Californian what is going on in his state when he (Al) does not
really know.
As for letting facts get in the way, that has never mattered for Alan. If
you catch him making an error, he either "didn't say that!" or claims he
was talking to someone other than the person he was responding to.
I am guessing he is the type that shakes hands with people who are not
there, too.
