That's currently the latest release. Sometimes there are newer development
versions, but they aren't published.

JAM is a standardized public format. There are no opperational issues between
golded and fmail on jam messagebases afaik, for instance.
There once was a report of someone that went from fastecho to fmail and back to
fastecho, where there was an issue with jam on the second step. But I don't
remember the details, and if it was investigated and or resolved or not...

You should. But it doesn't hurt to have backups. ;)
