If Janis did indeed choose Sean as her intended successor and gave him the password, why did she not inform her readers when she announced her departure?

There is no need for complexity. It would not be the first time that there was intervention from the e-list keeper to recover a "stranded" listing...

I would not call it foul play if the e-list keeper had marked the listing as "available" when Janis left.

Unfortunately the sad reality is that foul play has been a significant factor on many occasions in Fidonet.
