The downlink sends a Areafix request via a netmail message to the uplink. In
that netmail message addressed to "Areafix" at the uplinks's FTN address. The
Areafix password (That both uplink and downlink have agreed upon) is usually
placed in the subject line. In the text of the message is a list of echomail
areas that you wish to connect to or disconnect from. Your uplink can assist
you as the syntax of the areafix changes slightly based on the software used.
Once the areafix message is received by the uplink the message is processed
and the necessary actions are taken to connect/disconnect the requested
areas.
If I were a downlink of the system you are posting from I would address a
netmail
message:
Example: Msg : 5 of 8 Pvt
From : Your Name 2:5020/960.1 13 Feb 99 19:51:12
To : AreaFix 2:5020/960 15 Feb 99 21:57:42
Subj : PASSWORD <- Your Password

%LIST FIDO.* <- List available areas that match pattern
%LIST ! SBBS.* <- List all available areas except
-+- <- Signifies end of message to be processed
There are usually more commands available but these are the one that I remember
