the problem is that FE validates the characters that can be used in a directory
and file name...

what OS are you running? what memory managers and such?

you don't have to run the DPMI version(s) of anything unless you want to and/or
want to take advantage of some feature(s) they might offer... in the case of
FE, larger messages is one benefit...
