You must be referring to the smell of swamp gas that bubbles up to the surface
from the dead and decaying matter underneath. That's Louisiana's natural gas
industry at work. Yes. Swamps can smell that way, and they can also smell green
and fresh. It just depends on the specific area.
I remember the peculiar strong odor of sulfur gas that we get after a hurricane
passes. It stirs up the bottom of the bayous and shallow lakes causing the
nasty gas to be released. It will usually linger for weeks.
