Your found solution breaks the rules: [1] you can't break any sticks (the "!" looks like a broken match), and [2] you have to retain a valid "=" equation (the "! =" is not valid).

The easiest answers are 0 + 4 = 4, or 8 - 4 = 4.

Apparently there are a tonne of these matchstick puzzles. We had a family friend who introduced me to some of these back in the late 60's and early 70's.  They were fun to figure out.
