There are plenty of books I've come across that have page stains/damage ..and are not resalable - let alone undesirable to read due to the suspect damage (mold/mildew/water,coffee stains ..etc).  Maybe the ones on that project were the best that could be salvaged. Maybe no "good" books were harmed.  I have books that look like crap with  their dust-jackets, but beneath the wrap, the spines (and even some of the covers) are little works of art - and the pages of the book could be damaged.
