what meant everytime there was a NODEDIFF.??? such as NODEDIFF.340
NODEDIFF.ARC or NODEDIFF.A40. they all would be added to the filebase
with the same description.

       Now that Maximus is Open source you could port it to Linux.
Then you got your TCP/IP stack and firing  up Maximus would be easier.
One way is as follows:
/usr/sbin/telnetd -L /usr/sbin/maxbbs

your maxbbs batch file would like like this (its only a skeleton. you
fill in the blanks)

#!/bin/sh
# run maximus as a task thats not being used.
#  find unused node
# its only an example. you would have to figure where to state the
#node number yourself.
#/usr/bin/max -p /etc/fido/bbs.prm
