You seem to have at least stumbled on the most basic... getting on.. ;)
And you also managed to write a message, so you've figured out the text
editor, and how to send a message... another basic.  :)  Many of us use
bbses for sending messages to people all over... the different message
bases give us different types of things to talk about.  If you are
interested in cooking or eating, for instance, you might want to look at
the COOKING echo.  Read some of the messages, feel free to jump in and
answer something that looks interesting to you.  If you read an area for
a little while, you'll get a flavor of what the place is like, and what
to expect from those who regularly use that area.  Often rules are
posted, sometimes monthly, sometimes more or less often... :)

If you really get into messaging, you'll want to see about getting some
way of reading and writing messages offline...

... and I see that you are a user on Noel's board, so you can ask him
if he can give you some guidance there.  There might be files available
on the bbs to get you started... like an offline reader...  :)

If you are into playing games, that's another thing that bbses offer...
The only ones I tend to play are Scrabble and King of the Board, maybe
another word game or two... but there are all sorts of games available.

You can always ask more specific questions, and there probably will be
someone at hand to answer... :)
