I know that I had been running it for a couple years, and it wasn't until
recently that I started having issues. This is running dosemu v1.4.0.8 under
Ubuntu 18.04. I believe this version of dosemu runs freedos, so that might be
the difference...

That is true. Dosemu has pages of config settings that can be used...
