Hi Al,
being that you bought it recently, i'd say that it's the new
adjustment method. Old visitherms had that red thing that just slid up
and down the temp display when you turned the adjustment knob. now
they have a click stop feature (meaning that there are notches inside
the heater that stop the adjustment at precisely where you want them
to). The reason for the new feature, is that the old ones would slip
out of adjustment after a while, and the temp would drop in your tank.
The click stop feature stops this from happening, but it is a bit
harder to adjust. If you have one of the old models, then yes you have
one that is a bit unusual. Hope that helped!!
