That's accurate, but reductive. The economy depends on illegal workers, and we don't have a process that effectively allows them all to enter legally, track them, tax them appropriately, and make sure we send the people home to their home country if problems arise.

17% of Mexico's GDP is made up of US dollars expatriated by people sending money home to their families in Mexico. Deport all illegal immigrants and you bring down our neighbor, making their people more desperate and more willing to travel to the US for economic gain.
