And there's a fifth amendment that affirms the right to due process to
persons. Not citizens. No one is saying people who enter the US
illegally shouldn't be deported. We need to reconcile the country's need
for that labor, though. I think we're content to allow the workers into
the country who keep a low profile, pay sales taxes and work menial jobs
for comparatively low wages and deport those caught breaking laws other
than immigration. Whether that's OK, I'm not sure.
As a politician, I wouldn't want to be caught between being seen as
"easy on illegal immigration" by a republican opponent or asking your
constituents to pay $12 for a head of lettuce.
