Indeed it did. But what happened in the early hours is no mystery; it's been
well-documented. Not everyone voted on Election Day; some voted early and
some mailed in their voted. However, by law, those votes were to be stored
uncounted until Election Day.
A couple of factors influenced the respective makeups of the Election-Day and
early/mail-in votes:
1. One candidate made it abundantly clear to his supporters that mail-in
voting was not to be trusted, and
2. Early voting is more popular in places where there tend to be long lines
at the polls; i.e., urban areas.
So on Election Day, they start counting the votes, and they started with the
Election-Day votes which, due to the factors mentioned above, were
disproportionately urban/conservative/Republican. And then around 2am, as you
have noted, they finished up the Election-Day votes and moved on to the
early/mail-in votes, and due to the same factors these were
disproportionately rural/liberal/Democrat.
Rather than being some grand conspiracy, it boils down to behavioral
differences between voters for the two candidates.
