Preparing for end of self-hosting
=================================
I have started preparing to end my self-hosting. My Gopher burrow
and my website will be moving to a virtual server outside of the
home network.
It fills me with sadness.
For over two decades I have been self-hosting on all kind of
interesting hardware, like the original Acme-systems Foxboard,
a so-called Slug (NSLU2), probably one or more Olimex-boards,
a Raspberry Pi and of course, BeagleBone Blacks.
The tinkering with these boards always provided me with great joy,
and I learned a ton along the way.
New internet connection
-----------------------
Currently, a ADSL connection over a copper landline establishes our
internet connection. Due to the distance from the hub in the center
of the village, this connection is not very stable. We are looking
at a solution using a 5G router. This will result in increased
stability and much higher speeds.
The downside is that is practically unrealistic to self host any
internet facing services.
Before terminating our ADSL connection, I want to have the hosting
problem of the internet facing services solved, so I can concentrate
on keeping the local services available.
There are several services in our local network running on FreeBSD
jails or VM's. I expect that these will have to run from a wireless
system, when switching to a 5G router. This is the next challenge
to attack.
Finger
------
The finger page is delivered by some DIY ersatz-finger, this will
end when migrating to the external hosting.
Gophermap
---------
I started "restyling" the main Gophermap of my Gopher burrow. I
was already thinking about this, and the comming end of the finger
thingy and the migrating of the gopher-hosting were a trigger to
start working on it.
Now it just a quick fix, breaking up the big gophermap in a few
pieces. Maybe this is enough, time will tell.
Not yet migrated
----------------
The preparations focus on how to migrate from BSD to Debian,
and from one daemon to another, and to create some scripts to
make the process as smooth as possible.
I hope that when The Migration Day comes, there will not be much
problems left to be solved.
