OCC: DAY 4 | |
STARDATE: 20240716.2334
LOCATION: Kitchen Table
INPUT DEVICE: palmOne Tungsten E2 + palmOne IrDa folding keyboard
AUDIO: Audible typing clicks from E2, rockabilly music from flip
phone. | |
VISUAL: Bowl of cherries, Palm Memos
EMOTIONAL: ok, content.
Things from Day |V: | |
- Word To Go issues | |
- E2 latency and instability
- OCC hardware pic | |
- Personal computing bottleneck
OK, DataViz Word To Go is a hog and crashes the E2. It takes
awhile to load and then the screen gets all funky and I have to hit
the reset button on the back. Not sure what that is about, but I
have switched to the native Palm Memos application. Even though
Memos has its limitations, it's good enough for what I need at the
moment. | |
It seems that each time I use a large app and switch between apps,
instability is inevitable and I have to reset. For instance I load
a game (Legacy) and play for a bit, switch to a different app, and
everything is much slower with the potential of crashing. I don't
recall things being this way before or with other palm devices.
Maybe I got spoilt with the speed and task switching of the
devices of now. I wonder if the E2 is showing its age.
Here is a pic of my OCC setup. [1] On the left is the palmOne E2,
It is connected via infrared to the palmOne folding infrared
keyboard. The keyboard is not bad at all, but not as good as the
Royal Kludge bluetooth keyboard (right) I use for the Steam Deck
and other devices, I can touch-type with it all day without
problems. I do like how compact it is when it is folded and it is
pretty well protected if I have it in my bag.
The Nokia N900 is on the right and is connected to the monitor with
RCA video input. I think the display is 7" and has other input
options (HDMI, VGA, etc.) I have it mounted on a repurposed
broken clock. The height is at a nice level when placed on a table
and it also has speakers, The back of the clock has a door, so I
store the wall wart and route the cables in there. I had drilled a
hole in the bottom of the cabinet storage so the cables can be
accessed from the drawer. Pretty handy setup for testing video
out. The N900 is below the larger screen and the Royal Kludge
keyboard is in front of the clock base on the cutting mat.
One of the things I am not liking in dealing with my old hardware
is my lack of patience and motivation for doing things the "old
way." I used to be fine doing things the "old way"...when I was in
practice and until I got used to doing things a "better" way or
"different" way. | |
It's akin to my guitar playing. I gravitate m0ar to what is easy.
Practicing music I already know and practicing regularly is easy.
Playing pieces I haven't practiced in a long time or learning new
pieces is hard. Creating original pieces is next-level challenging!
I think I am at the point in my personal computing...or maybe even
my life, where I got too much exposure to different software,
hardware, technologies, and ways of doing things that I'm at the
point of buffer overflow. My wetware is flooded and is resisting
m0ar! Somebody pleez turn of da intarwebz firehose! There is too
much hiss in the signal! There are CRC errors and packets are
dropping at the smartjack! loopback remote line fdl bellcore!
Time for Out Of Band Management! /me drops down to single-user
mode. I CAN'T KEEP UP! I CAN'T KEEP UP! I CAN'T KEEP UP!!! OUT
OF STEP WITH THE WORLD!!!
And I think that is why these days I use a flip phone for my
personal mobile, limit my online/computing time, spend most of my
time in meatspace...with limited exposure to people. Well, I'm not
sure what this is, but that is where I am at today and probably a
story for another time.
